мн.ч. Читатель, учитывая контекст, должен понимать его смысл. Это – видоизмененная древняя фамилия "hairyfoot" ("некто с волосатыми ступнями"). Подразумевается, что это соответствует древнему английскому "hæ‾r-fōt" (позднее – "herfoot"), с обычной заменой "er" на "ar" в английском языке. Слово "hair"("волосы") в современном английском родственно древнеанглийскому "hæ‾r", "hēr" (немецкое "Haar"), но не происходит от него напрямую. В немецком языке слово "Harfuss" достаточно точно передавало бы смысл, звучание и небольшие отличия от первоначальной фамилии. См. Fallohide.
